Brian O’Donovan Obituary-Death News; Victim Passed Away After a Battle With Glioblastoma

After a protracted battle with cancer, Brian O’Donovan, the longstanding host of GBH’s radio programme A Celtic Sojourn and the creator and host of “A Christmas Celtic Sojourn,” which has been a holiday tradition for New Englanders for more than 20 years, passed away on Friday at his home. He was 66.Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, was the cause of death.

In a statement, Susan Goldberg, president and chief executive officer of GBH, said: “His enthusiasm for music and his sheer joy in sharing it were plainly obvious to GBH listeners, whether of his weekly broadcast or of his energetic live events.

Brian never encountered a stranger during his more than 35 years working for our company. His friendliness towards his coworkers and his steadfast dedication to GBH’s goal will be sorely missed.

Every year, O’Donovan performs “A Christmas Celtic Sojourn,” a performance that combines live music, dancing, and narrative. During these performances, he transports the audience to the Irish Christmases of his youth.

Even if they involved “fairly mundane things,” like who got to light the Christmas candle on Christmas Eve or who received the first cup of “Van Houten’s” hot chocolate, he described the traditions that were important to his family.
