Sean Cowley first played hockey and developed his talents at Garfield Heights. In 1986, he competed in the Cleveland Americans USA Hockey Pee Wee Tier 1 Nationals qualifiers, and subsequently, while playing four years of varsity hockey at Trinity High School, he was named an All-Scholastic and All-Ohio defenseman.
Starting at the young age of 14, Sean assisted his father with Pee Wee AA teams in Garfield Heights as part of his commitment to the sport, which included coaching. He continued to coach at other levels, leaving an imprint in South Carolina, Buffalo, and Cleveland.
